Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

  • Are you troubled by abdominal pain or discomfort, irregular bowel habits, bloating, diarrhoea or constipation?
  • Do you feel that foods or lifestyle factors trigger your gut symptoms?
  • Have you tried modifying your diet on your own, yet your symptoms have persisted or it has led to following a long-term restrictive diet?

Diet and lifestyle plays a pivotal role in IBS and, thankfully, there is now strong scientific evidence to support the benefit of diet and lifestyle strategies in tackling IBS symptoms.

Our team will help you understand why you experience gut symptoms and support you with step-by-step guidance and practical diet and non-diet strategies, to take control of your IBS symptoms and get your life back.

The focus is on
your goals

Our programmes are supported by science and tailored to you.

Your dietitian will focus on your goals, which may be to reduce pain or bloating, improve bowel movements (consistency or frequency), or simply to feel confident in choosing a meal that works for your body when out at a restaurant.

Our IBS package has been developed by our team of specialist dietitians who have extensive clinical experience, as well as working at forefront of research at King's College London.

We have helped thousands of client tackle their IBS and enjoy the far reaching health benefits of good gut health.

What you can look
to achieve

If you’re unsure about how our IBS package would work for your lifestyle or specific health conditions, please contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss.

What the IBS package includes

~ You will have an initial 60-minute consultation, followed by two 45-minute review appointments. Typically appointments are 4-6 weeks apart; your dietitian will guide you based on your unique circumstance, because every gut is different!

~ Your dietitian will take into account your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, dietary requirements and eating habits as well as consider any barriers/challenges in order to tailor a programme that works for you.

~ After each appointment, your dietitian will send you a summary letter, which will include your action plan, including practical strategies discussed in your consultation, and any necessary supporting resources. You’ll receive this letter within 5 working days to your preferred email address.

~ Email support from your dietitian between sessions. This is up to 2 email exchanges per session, with the option to purchase an unlimited email support package if you feel you need that extra level of support – some of our clients find it keeps them more accountable.

~ In some circumstances your dietitian may need to liaise with your medical doctor (only with your consent) to help you manage your medical condition or to request investigations.

~ If necessary, we can arrange for certain tests to be carried out,  or refer you to a private gastroenterologist for further investigation. We can also write to your doctor to request these via the NHS if you prefer.

~ If appropriate, we can refer you to our clinical psychologist who can work with you to address any non-dietary factors that may be affecting your progress. Note that these sessions are chargeable separately.

FAQs

Our IBS package costs £415, which is a £50 saving versus booking the sessions individually.

An added benefit of the package is that it keeps you accountable, helping you prioritise your health and get your IBS under control once and for all. Evidence tells us that those who finish the programme see improved success versus having just a one-off session. If you would prefer to book each session individually, we can arrange that for you.

Note that a non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking to be fair to other clients looking to book an appointment. Full payment can be spread across several instalments for your convenience.

Yes, of course. We are always on the end of an email or telephone so please just ask if you’d like to have a chat with one of the team to ensure it’s right for you before committing to the package.

No you don’t need to have a confirmed diagnosis. Ideally you will have already seen your GP regarding your symptoms and had some initial tests to exclude other causes for your symptoms. But we understand that this isn’t always feasible. If you haven’t yet seen your GP, we can write to them outlining the tests required according to medical guidelines. We can also arrange these tests to be done privately if you prefer.

If you are waiting for any test results but are eager to get started, we can certainly make a start.

If you already have a diagnosis of IBS, we can help you understand what this means exactly, and importantly, how you can take control.

Not necessarily. In many cases there’s other less burdensome dietary and lifestyle measures that we can address to help you improve your symptoms. These are discussed in that first session with you and may include strategies to help target your gut-brain connection, if appropriate.

If we feel that a low FODMAP diet may be beneficial for you, then we will discuss all the details of this and together determine whether it is appropriate. In some cases we recommend a modified or simplified version of the diet. If you don’t know what the diet is, rest assured we will explain it to you in simple terms.

If the low FODMAP diet has been recommended then we will guide you through the 3-phase process, and we have teamed up with Field Doctor to provide our clients with a discount on a custom Gut Health Clinic low FODMAP meal bundle which may make your life easier (and tastier!) during that first phase of the diet. This is of course optional, but can help reduce the burden of following the diet.

It’s important to remember that the low FODMAP diet is only temporary – it isn’t intended to be a permanent way of eating – and in fact doing so may be problematic long-term. Your dietitian will explain everything to you, including when and how to reintroduce all foods back into your diet.

In our experience we see that often the low FODMAP diet was not done correctly the first time round (through no fault of your own). The FODMAP resources available online are often invalid and don’t use the latest data from Monash University and King’s College London.

Or, perhaps the diet was done correctly, but other important areas of gut health were not addressed at the time, such as fluid, fibre, movement, sleep and an over worked gut-brain connection.

In some instances you may benefit from revisiting the low FODMAP diet using our evidence-based resources (studies have shown that it is effective in 50-86% of individuals with IBS), but we do acknowledge that it isn’t the answer for everyone.

In some cases we may recommend testing for other conditions such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or bile acid malabsorption, or discuss how top-down therapies that focus on the gut-brain connection may benefit your IBS. We have our own Psychologist, Dr Lucy Field who can support you with the latest cutting edge techniques that target the gut-brain connection.

In exceptional circumstances, pauses in programmes can be arranged. We will discuss your individual circumstances with you to determine the most appropriate course of action. Note that missed sessions are unfortunately not refundable to be fair to other clients looking to book, as well as our dietitian’s time.

Yes, you will work with the same dietitian for your programme duration. In exceptional circumstances we may have to allocate you to a different dietitian but will always discuss this with you in advance.

Every gut is different. Many clients feel confident and in control of their IBS following the programme so don’t need to plan further appointments. We do, however, have maintenance programmes available if you feel you need continued support. These can be arranged with your dietitian based upon your individual needs.

We encourage you to get in touch with our team before committing to the programme to ensure it’s right for you. Our programmes are non-refundable apart from exceptional circumstances.
